SoundCloud and Zelle are taking over the iconic Native Hostel in the heart of downtown Austin. For two nights, March 12th and 13th, Room 512 will bring to life the music discovery experience fans experience on SoundCloud everyday. The event will spotlight every corner of the platform from hip-hop and alternative, to electronic and pop, with performances by Elohim, Jay Prince, Kitty Cash, Melo Makes Music, Nilufer Yanya, Party Pupils, Smokepurpp, Whethan and Yung Pinch.
Kicking off the first night on March 12th will be DJ duo Party Pupils, followed by performances from Nilüfer Yanya, Yung Pinch, Elohim and headliner Whethan. Night two on March 13th will feature Melo Makes Music, Jay Prince and headliner Smokepurpp, along with Kitty Cash on the decks throughout the evening. More on each artist and their unique journey as part of the SoundCloud community:
With one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2018 set to drop shortly, the Los Angeles artist and producer Elohim has quickly emerged as one of this year’s most buzzworthy artists. She’s been uploading to SoundCloud since 2015 and collaborated with Room 512 headliner Whethan on track “Sleepy Eyes.” Elohim is known for her wide-ranging artistry, and intricately arranged production against subtle melodies and crystalline vocals. Most recently, she released her brand new single, “Fuck Your Money,” from her forthcoming album, and in March, she’s slated to kick off on a headline North American tour with a direct support tour with The Glitch Mob to follow in May. Elohim also is performing throughout the festival season with upcoming appearances at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest and Buku.
SoundCloud Premier artist Jay Prince has been on the platform since 2009, sharing his nostalgia-inducing, 90s hip-hop-influenced sound. The artist and music producer has had a slew of indie releases beginning with “BeFor Our Time” in 2015 and, more recently, “Late Summers” in 2017. His sound sets him apart from the U.K. grime scene.
The international DJ, producer and music executive, joined SoundCloud in early 2013. She’s primarily influenced by R&B, though blends in hip-hop, pop, dancehall and reggae, and is primarily known for her “Love the Free” mixes, which she started uploading to the platform in 2013. The series helped her quickly gain popularity on the platform. She’s well known among music art and fashion worlds alike, and has worked with everyone from Marina Abramovic to Swizz Beatz, not to mention Opening Ceremony and Vogue.
A SoundCloud 2018 Artist to Watch and SoundCloud Premier artist, Melo Makes Music hails from the burgeoning Chicago music scene, which has produced a number of independent artists including Chance the Rapper and Taylor Bennett, who Melo will be on tour with this spring. Melo Makes Music is best known for his topical lyrics and music often reflective of his personal experiences.
A BBC Sound of 2018 artist and a SoundCloud 2018 Artist to Watch who joined in 2011, Nilüfer's Jeff Buckley-esque guitar rock has made her a favorite of Pitchfork (three "Best New Tracks" and counting), Stereogum, Pigeons & Planes, and NPR Music, who named her their newest 2018 "Slingshot" artist. The FADER called her "London's effortlessly smooth new soul star-" watch her retro, cultish new video for "Thanks 4 Nothing," which Noisey called an "absolutely great pop song," here, to see why.
Comprised of MAX, and producer RyanEXOE, Party Pupils started uploading to SoundCloud in 2016, and shortly thereafter joined SoundCloud Premier. The DJ duo quickly gained a loyal following for their remixes of classic tracks like Ginuwine's “Pony” and Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson.” They dropped their first original track, “Patient” on SoundCloud in 2017, and most recently released a funkified reboot of "This Is How We Do It" on Steve Aoki's Dim Mak Records.
Smokepurpp started on SoundCloud in 2012 and quickly rose to stardom on the platform and beyond. His first mixtape, Deadstar, dropped on SoundCloud in October 2017. In addition to his role as a long-time creator on the platform, he’s recognized as an influencer to the latest wave of SoundCloud-bred rappers.
Joining SoundCloud in 2014, Whethan immediately gained attention for his impressive remixes, which give a new take on pop, EDM, alternative and hip-hop tracks. His recent six-track “Honey” mixtape with fellow Chicago natives Louis The Child, propelled him to the top of SoundCloud’s New & Hot Electronic chart. At the young age of 18, Whethan boasts chart-topping and forward thinking tracks having accumulated streams in the millions including, “love gang” (feat. Charli XCX), “Savage” (feat. Flux Pavilion & MAX), “Good Nights” (feat. Mascolo) which was pegged to his 42-city “Good Nights” headline tour across North America, and most recently his new collaboration with Dua Lipa,“High”, featured in the blockbuster film “Fifty Shades Freed”. Whethan has performed in arenas as support for The Chainsmokers, alongside smashing festival appearances at Lollapalooza, Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival, Electric Forest, HARD Music Festival, as well as at Coachella’s DoLab & Heineken House. He will return to Coachella as an official performer on the Sahara Tent this April.
Yung Pinch joined the platform in 2012, and quickly signed on to the SoundCloud Premier program. In addition to debuting his first studio album, 714Ever, in 2017, he also supported other SoundCloud-rooted artists on tour including Post Malone and Lil Uzi Vert. Following his appearance at SXSW, Yung Pinch is set to kick off his first headline tour.
